Disable ipsec

I've been trying to connect to my network with an L2TP connection through a safecom router. When connecting I was getting this error: "Error 781. The connection requires a certificate and no valid certificate was found" I contacted safecom and they sent me some instructions, the of which advised that I run a registry fix called "disable ipsec" »support.iglou.com/fom-serve/cache/473...
I created a restore point, ran the fix and the connection worked. The log in my router even recognised it as an L2TP connection.
My question is, is it safe? Is it the same as using PPTP? Any view would be appreciated. I have restored my PC to the original setting until I get clarification on this.

Not entirely sure on this but if the fix is intended to "disable IPSec" then I would assume that's exactly what it does, so could well be just acting as a PPtP connection....not sure though so hopefully somebody else can verify.

Is PPtP *THAT* bad? What sort of data are you accessing on your network?
