sorry about asking about home edition but is xp power tools the only way to disable autoinsert using home edition? my dos program users are getting booted out (minimized) when they insert a zip backup disk. i got them holding the shift key down for now.

Here is the location for turning off auto insert notification. Its through registry. Go to run, type regedit and hit enter. Navigate to following location.

Hkey_local_machine, CurrentControlSet, Services, click cdrom so its hightlighted in blue. Look to your right and right click on autorun, change the value to 0 for off and 1 for on. This wont take affect till you restart your computer. There is also a utility called tweakui that has features for turning this off and others if you want to look at it.

Thank you for replying.
I did read that earlier but my concern when reading it was,
the device in question is a zip drive...not a cdrom. Will it work just the same?
Regards

Will it work just the same?"

It is reversible, try it and let us know.

To Disable CD autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Home

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Then go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new value called: NoDriveTypeAutoRun
Type is: DWORD
Value is: 0x000000b1 (177)

You may need to log off/log on or reboot for the change to take effect. Additionally, you may need Administrator privileges to edit the Registry.

To undo this change, set the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value back to 91 (145) instead of B1 (177)
