Directory Service Cannot Start

I was trying to start the service but in vain. It gave me this error:

"Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Directory Service on Local computer.
The service did not start an error. This could be an internal Windows error
or an internal service error.
If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."

Please could someone assist me to sort this problem. By the way if I copy
the dsdata folder which is an older version it works.

Have you tried to reboot the Server, that way all the services will stop and restart. If that doesnt work then you really do need to look further ie attempt to undo what you may have recently done that could affect the service etc etc

I have done that. If I load back the sample dsdata folder it starts. So even if I start the server there is nothing much.
