Directory Permissions Dropped

Does anyone know why W2k inadvertently drops security permissions on files or folders? No software installation or configuration takes place for this to happen. This is totally confusing me. Thanks.

Believe it or not, I have seen security problems when a nic was sending out bad broadcasts. This could be a possible problem. Glen A. Johnson

Thanks. I appreciate the help from everybody. Still haven't figured it out. I had a similar problem with a 800 mhz Dell Server.
