How would I go about enabling a directory level security... I have a stand alone computer and want to be able to say this group can only read certain directories, while read/write to others...

Life is change. To deny change is to deny life.

setup the groups and users in the local users and groups section of computer management. make sure you have the data on an NTFS partition. set the security just as you would in a domain structure...but chosing the local users and groups instead.

Hey Bob,

I don't mean to cut into this thread but I've got a similar situation except...I've got 5 networked workstations in a small office running Windows XP Home without a domain. We are using DHCP which is provided by the building management and all of the workstations can see each other.

We're in the process of adding a file server running Win XP Pro, and we want to customize file access for each user so that they can access files on the server from their own workstations with password, but not have access to all files on the server.

When we invested in the server we were told that this would work, but we're having a tough time getting the server to add the users on the other workstations in the office as it only seems to recognize and offer the local users.

Is this fixable by setting up the local users and groups also?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

John

There is no feature to enumerate local users from the XP machine.

Add as local users with passwords the users to the XP machine by hand.

This is exactly why it is always expressed that WORKGROUPS are hard to manage. When not part of a domain, each PC uses its own SAM database for all security issues....so you have to put each user on every computer and give appropriate access to resources on that computer...
