Hello,

I have a two server Exchange 5.5 site.

One server lost the drive that the dir.edb was stored on. I have an offline backup of both priv.edb and pub.edb.
I have online backups of the failed exchange but they are two days old.

Can I recreat the dir.edb from logs? can I just copy the dir.edb from the other working server? Or do i need to install exchange again and import ispriv and ispub?

thanks.

Here is an answer that will explain it. It sounds about right because I don't think you can recreate a new dir.edb without emptying the dsadata folder

Also, unlike the Priv.edb and Pub.edb files, the Dir.edb file is machine name specific and the system cannot regenerate a new one if the old one is missing. If a directory becomes unusable and there are no viable backups, you can stop the directory service on the computer, and move all of the files out of the Dsadata directory on all drives that the Exchange Optimizer has placed them in. The original Dir.edb can then be copied from the backup directory and you can restart the directory.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

thanks for that,

I sorted it. finally found a goo online backup of the exch directory....

thanks again
