Hi i have a problem with duplicate machine names on the network

The problem is on some NT 4 workstations when you do an ipconfig /all it returns a machine name that is already in use

but when you go through control panel and into networks there is a different machine name that is unique.

I do not understand how this has come about and how to make sure both names are the same

Do you mean the host name that appears in ip config differs from the one in network properties?

Have you tried just renaming them from network properties?

Removing and rejoining domain (if it is a domain?)

(this isn't a DNS server issue?)

There is a difference between the NetBIOS name and the DNS hostname, although they should be the same. If it wasn't NT 4.0 I'd say this sounds like a deployment issue to me. Have these computers been built recently?

If you are using Ghost or some other deployment tool, but are not running Ghostwalk, or if you're using some sort of unattended install and not running sysprep, you will end up with duplicate hostnames and SIDs on your network. That's the first thing I would check to prevent the problem from happening again.

If you don't think that's where the problem's coming from, let me know.
