What is the difference between the Pentium 4 423 socket and the pentium 4 478 socket. They're both out with the 2 gigahertz.

The difference is in the number of pins the processor has.

The P4 423 uses a PGA 423 socket which has 423 pins.
The P4 478 uses an mPGA 478 socket which has 478 pins.

The performance of either processor with the same MHz is identical.

Intel changed to the mPGA 478 package to allow for future upgrades.
If you want to upgrade to a processor faster than 2GHz then I suggest you get a 478 pin processor and motherboard.

Hope this answers your question. Good luck.
