difference between 3550....

Would like to know the difference between
1. 3550 48 smi with emi image.
2. 3550 48 emi

Is one better than the other? Someone please explain the difference. Is the "with emi image" part just a firmware upgrade similar to an updated ios?

1 - The 3550 48 SMI with EMI image allows you to configure the advanced features of EMI software (advanced routing protocols, and many other features).

2 - The 3550 48 EMI is the same switch, with the EMI software running already. Same features.

thanks for the response. Does this mean number 1 allows configuration of both smi and emi features while number 2 only allows emi features to be configured?

The EMI image contains ALL the features of the SMI image with some additional features:

Inter-VLAN Multicast Routing (PIM etc)
Advanced Routing Protocols - OSPF, EIGRP, ISIS, BGP
WCCP:

The SMI & EMI images are the same apart from these 2 features.
