Dial-up not reconnecting

I have had a problem since I upgraded from 98 to XP. After I disconnect from the internet, some apps like Magic Mail Monitor will not get Windows to try and reconnect when they need a connection. IE and Outlook will, but the connection will give up after the 'verifying username and password' part. It doesn't hang, just gives up.

Also, why are there more asterisks in the password box than in my password? It doesn't seem to affect anything, but is strange!

Do you use ZoneAlarm?

I have uninstalled ZoneAlarm and my connection now works fine. I think the solution may lie in the fact that my ISP dynamically allocates Domain Name Servers at connection time and they do change regularly. I will try allocating a fixed DNS to my connection and see if that helps.
