All of my dial up clients are able to connect to the RRAS server, but after they are authenticated and registered on the network, they all hang on the 'Applying user settings' screen and they never reach the desktop. I think this maybe a GPO issue and I have tried putting the computers in a OU with no GPO and blocking inheritence. Please help! Thanks

valicon,

are the vpn users getting a correct dns server address ?
do the machines ever connect? if so, have someone ruu an ipconfig /all and see if they are getting correct dns and addressing info...

No VPN, these are dial up users. They never get past the 'Applying user settings' screen so we can't do an ipconfig. I can see on the rras mmc that the user is connected and received an IP. But like I said, it just hangs on the 'Applying user settings' screen!

Anyone else ever see this before? I am almost starting to think that it is DNS related.

valicon,

that is where i was going with my previous post. DNS. my experience with unusually long login times is that the machine is not talking to a valid DNS server, thus cannot locate the SRV records to find DC's, ect...

do your dial-in clients have hard coded ip addressing info ?

scottie

I have tried hard coding and DHCP. The error in the event log for the client is event id 5719 cannot find a dc.

right. SRV record for DC's. does the RRAS server log any info about the connection being established? does iasparse.exe give any clues (from the win2k resource kit) to the connection sequence ?

just thinking outloud...
