I can't believe I have not encountered this yet! Customer reports their new IPO system dial by first name is not working for user name Suzanne. Sure enough the legacy equipment has QZ on the "0" button, other single line phones don't even have the Q or Z on it at all. It seems most new business phones have the Z on the "9" button. This is creating a mispelling of her name and no user found. The customer likes "first name" as opposed to last name as on their old Norstar Flash. I thought about recording an entry prompt for the Dial by Name to say "please enter the first 2 letters of the person's first name you wish to contact, followed by #". BTW, can I do my own new recording at the entry prompt or do I have to rerecord the existing system Dial by Name prompt? Another idea I had was to record an entry prompt "please spell the first name of the person you wish to contact, Push 7 for the letter Q or Push 9 for the letter Z. I also suggested a Menu directory, however, having 30+ employees they didn't like the suggestion. Is there a better method to overcome this problem? Thanks.

To resolve the Dial by Name, we ended up recording an Entry Prompt "....Push 7 for the letter Q and Push 9 for the letter Z" so now the user name "Suzanne" can be found!

However, the system now plays the new custom prompt followed by the default system Dial by Name prompt. I had the customer repeat their custom greeting 3 times to avoid callers reaching the default system prompt but this just isn't right. I don't want to lose the default prompt or save to external source, I'm concerned if I rename the file it will still try to play and get "hung up". The default prompt doesn't show as playing, only the custom prompt shows in Order 1. No order 2 for default Dial by Name prompt to remove. I even looked through the wav files to see which file it is and I can't even find a match to the audible recording. Any way to get it to stop playing that default prompt?

Any suggestions appreciated.

They must have some crazy ass phones, as I have never seen one that is different to any other, hence why dial by name works pretty much the world over :)

Norstar legacy equipment M7208, etc. has Q and Z on the "0" button. Comdial Impact 1st generation tel. set has no Q or Z at all. I also have an older Northern Telecom single line phone which doesn't have Q or Z either. I looked at the newer business phones I have lying around and they are all indicated properly. Due to the nature of their work, more than normal incoming call traffic could be coming from older single line phones.

Any suggestion on how to turn off the default Dial by Name system prompt? I'd really like to fix that.....

any default prompt can be rerecorded but that doesn't change the functionality.

Sorry if you have phones that are so old (I am in business since 1984 and have never seen any different since they put letters on phones) then the problem is not with the IPO it is with the phones that should have been replaced 10 years ago when they had their 10th birthday.

Just to clarify, the problem isn't with the IPO telephone sets as the customer has 9508's. The callers calling in were reporting having problems! Since the customer are social workers, the callers complaining were their clients who likely have old equipment. Since the Norstar is still in use worldwide the users with M series legacy phones could be the other culprit. The legacy Norstar phones will be around many more years too.

Since we created a new prompt and repeated it 3 times (" enter first 3 letters of first name followed by #, for the letter Q press 7 for letter Z press 9" ), I don't think anyone will notice the original system prompt coming on after. I think looking up by fewer digits is better/faster anyway. I was just curious if anyone has stopped that original prompt from playing?

Just sack Suzanne :) problem solved

There are 2 Suzanne's to boot[thumbsup2]. Sacking the Suzannes's will put Suzy on edge for weeks [surprise].

This was even worse with the old INDeX phones

The DT handsets & the 2030 series had different layouts, 20 series handsets adopted the current standard layout as used by mobile phones where as DT's had the Q & Z on 0.

The Avaya docs indicated that only 20 series handsets were supported but these handsets are actually identical hardware & software with just a case & printing change so it is impossible for any system (INDeX or IPO) to differentiate.

I knew it was documented which type of dialpad needs to be used:

Code:
Dial by Name

Using the Dial by Name action, callers can indicate the user or group that they require by dialing the name on their telephone keypad and then making a selection from the matches found.

To use this feature the caller must use a telephone with DTMF dialing and with ITU alphabet letter keys as shown here.
