Some people test with a program called PRIME. It is more for testing the floating point calculations of your processor. This program should not be left running too long. It has been known to burn up a processor with bad cooling. This program just does mathematical calculations to test floating point functions of the processor. Usually if this program has problems then either your processor or your memory has problems. Most likely it is the memory.
I recommend you buy memory that the manufacturer of the memory claims will work with your motherboard or make/model of your computer. Most popular manufacturers can give you a guarantee of compatibility or at least tell you what memory to purchase to insure compatibility. One size does not always fit all.
You can find Prime in places for free on the Internet.
Another idea is to write zeros to your entire drive before you format it. what this does is erase everything and put the drive to a test. A guy at IBM claimed it was a good way to condition a drive and reveal all of the bad sectors when you format. Since it physically writes to every spot on the drive it helps work the kinks out. I tried it on an old IBM hard drive and it helped quite a bit. It also erases all remnants of a drive overlay program or a previous NT, W2K or XP install. You do have to make new partitions and logical drives and then format and start over.

'how do you write zeros to the entire drive'
many disk manufacturers have a utility to do this on their website. Also third party software available like
There are free burn-in programs out there that you can DL from any of the better shareware sites like download.com, simtel.(I forget either .net or .org), etc. And you can DL System Mechanic from download.com for a 30-day trial.
. SmithMicro.com has just come out with a new version of CheckIt, one of my old stand-by diagnostic suites. It has a burn-in module too.
