I think this problem may have started with a virus, because the machine was really hosed up. It kept giving me an IP address of 0.0.0.0. If it was hardware I would have expected 169.254.x.x. This machine is using a cable modem plugged into a nic. Both modem and nic show up as 0.0.0.0 with dhcp enabled when I do ipconfig /all. I checked the services, and it showed the dhcp service was starting, but all options, Start, Stop, Pause, Disable were greyed out. I couldn't do a thing. I checked and the logon was set to local account. I changed it to match dns and tcp/ip services to NT AUTHORITY|Network Service. After re-boot, the options were no longer greyed out. The problem now is the admin password doesn't seem to work, so the machine will try and start the dhcp service, but then times out. If I try and start it a second time, I recieve the error message that it's using the wrong account. I've tried re-installing xp, but it won't install because it fails with the error message of a previous service wasn't fully installed. I went into the admin account, changed the password, re-booted with nothing changing. These people were on the internet with no problem until the teacher came home with a floppy from school of troubled teens, and ran the floppy with no anti-virus installed. I've installed Norton, but since I can't get on the internet, the definitions are from 2003. I ordered a floppy of the newest version if IE6 and installed that. I'm running out of ideas. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. She also has n-case installed, but this is only spy-ware and I haven't gotten around to removing it yet.
