I am running 2003 server on our lan with about 100 desktops. I am running static i.p. addresses on all but I want to switch to static on the servers and DHCP on the clients. I also have a sonicwall tz-170 that runs dhcp for a small block of addresses (5) for our VPN connections. When I configure the 2003 server to run DHCP my clients get the i.p. handed to them by the firewall/gateway, not the server. How can I force the server as the one to use?

Thanks in advance,

Shannan

Make sure the firewall/gateway doesn't hand them out on that interface. Should be an option there somewhere.

There is the option to turn that off. If I do so, will the DHCP server take over for the VPN connections?

Thanks - Shannan

We issue fixed IP's to both servers and VPN users here.

How are your VPN clients connecting? Do you have RRAS setup, or are you using the build in VPN features of your SonicWall?

If they are connecting directly to your sonic firewall, what is the relationship to your Windows Server to the sonic device (i.e. same subnet, same segment?)

The users are connecting directly with the Sonicwall using the global vpn client. Yes the sonicwall/gateway is on the same subnet as the network.

Thanks- Shannan

I would seperate the subnets, and have the Windows server route the traffic for the VPN clients. Then you can safely leave DHCP enabled on both sides, and you will know that your clients are getting the right lease from the right DHCP server.
