Hi

I have installed a new NT4 server as a bdc and am going to promote it to PDC with the intention of replacing the PDC.

The current PDC is a dhcp server, should i set up the new server to give out dhcp addresses and remove the scope form the old server? or can i have them both running together. And if i promote the new server to PDC and remove DHCP from the old server will there be ip conflicts with pc's the leased IP addresses

cheers

You may have both running only if there scopes do not conflict(overlap each other) As for adding the other one I am not exactly sure. If it was a small orginization I would put the new one online and go around and release and renew the ip's by: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew at the command prompt for nt,2k,wp And you can use the GUI for this in 9x by typing winipcfg at the run command.

In the DHCP Properties on the new server (in DHCP Admin, click on the server name and go File -> Properties), you can turn on conflict detection. This will tell the server to ping the address its about to give out and check if it's live.

With that set, you can turn off the scope on the old server, and activate the same scope on the new server.
