I recently created a domain in my home.
I have a 2003 Enteprise server installed that will accept traffic to and from the Internet when I assign static IP's.
when I attempt to attach a computer to the domain I am being told that the Domain is not valid, or that no Valid DHCP controller is available.

I have a valid DHCP scope, it is activated and I was able to add anoher server to it. Seems as though I can not add clients to the domain unless I manually assign an IP's first.

Any Thoughts?

What I found is that DNS while appearing to be correctly configured, after being removed and re-installed started renewing and issuing DHCP addresses.

Couple things to check:

It sounds like you have a link to the internet...you probably have a cable modem or a DSL modem...

1- Make sure that your CAble modem isn't hading our DHCP addresses. Turn OFF DHCP on your modem. If you get an address from the wrong DHCP server, you may not be able to talk to your domain. Make sure you can ping the server first. Then try to join the domain.

2- Make sure that you DHCP scope is set so that the DNS being handed out points to your local server. Many people make the mistake of trying to use thier ISP DNS servers for internal resolution. Because Win2K is DNS dependant, this won't work. Therefore, all clients should point to your internal Windows 2K DNS server for DNS. Your Win2K DNS server should then forward requests to your ISP DNS servers. You may have to delete the "." root zone to make this happen.

3- Reinstall DNS...sometimes DNS could be corrupt causing issues with your network. Reinstall the DNS service and reisntall the latest service pack.
