Let start by saying I'm new to DHCP so forgive me if I say something wrong. Ok here we go. I have a pc with 2000 server installed, active directory is setup and I have DNS and DHCP setup on the pc. I have a second pc with windows professional. Everytime I log into my my domain from the client my IP address is coming from the DHCP of the router instead of the DHCP setup on the server. I tried ipconfig /release and renew from the client; but I get an error because I don't have rights. I even went to the server and added the client computer and the user account to the admin group still no luck. What am I doing wrong? Can someone please help me with this.

Thanks In Advance

You need to disable the DHCP server on the router. Go into your router config, you should somewhere see an option to disable it.

Hi thanks for your response. I went and disable the dhcp on my router. Now my client can't reach the dhcp on the 2000 server. I have my scope set up and the dchp server is authorized. What else do I need to check. I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing then I'll let my router continue to lease IP addresses.

Thanks In Advance

DHCP broadcasts from the client will not traverse the router until you allow the router to do so. In Cisco this is know as an "IP-Helper Address." The IP Helper on the router sends DHCP requests from clients on the network to your specified DHCP server.

Thanks for the reply. I have a westell versalink 327 router; so I don't know if it has this feature. I'm assuming this is a feature on cisco routers. Well anyway I will do some research and see if I can find a way to get this setup. Again thanks for the replies.
