Hi.

I’m having a problem with DHCP, AD, & DNS. I have a mix environment of 2000 & 2003 server and 2000 and XP workstation. I’m in the process of upgrading my old servers to 2003. I have 25 local servers and 2 remote servers. I have over 30 remote sites, each one having a different subnet. I’m currently running DNS on two 2003 servers & one 2000 server. The primary DNS is running on 2003 and the secondary is running on 2000. I also have AD running on both 2003 servers. I want to replicate AD & DNS on both 2003 servers. I also want to make sure if one of the 2003 servers goes down the other one will take over AD & DNS. Once this is working, I want to have DHCP, AD, & DNS on my remote servers. All my workstations have DHCP enable however DNS is manually configured. On most of my servers I have two NIC configured with one configured on the 192.168.249.x subnet and the other configured with 100.100.100.x subnet. I want to get rid of the 100.100.100.x subnet, however all workstations are pointing to both DNS servers on the 100.100.100.x subnet.

Let the record show that I didn’t start this fire, I inherit it. The new servers I have configured are on the newest subnet of 192.168.253.x with only one NIC configured. You can image most of the errors and problems I have on my servers. (Duplicate name, The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory, The File Replication Service is having trouble enabling replication, The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization.)
What is the best way to clean up this mess? Thank you.

We need more information to help. posting the event id with errors may help. I would focus on the DNS first. normally, if there are two DNS in the LAN, you will setup primary DNS and 2nd DNS servers point to each other as primary and themselves as secondary. If you have two or more DNS servers in different locations, you will setup primary DNS and 2nd DNS servers point to themselves as primary and each other as secondary. This troubleshootnig may help,
