DFS - Distributed File System

Okay, I'm running Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition.

I have a File server, lets call it SERVER1.

I understand that I can't use FRS on one server and replicate amongst shares on one server. Although, here is my problem.

DFS claims to be able to combine shares into one logical space. Great!! Can someone please tell me why the following isn't working:

DFS ROOT = \\DOMAIN\HOMEDIR
HOMEDIR LINK = \\SERVER1\SHARE1
HOMEDIR LINK = \\SERVER1\SHARE2

The server makes it obvious I can't use FRS, because when I try it yells at me for having two shares on the same server.

Should I not be able to see BOTH the contents in \SERVER1\SHARE1 and \\SERVER1\SHARE2 inside DFS SHARE \\DOMAIN\HOMEDIR ????

I can set either as being my ACTIVE REFERRAL when I right click on the path \\DOMAIN\HOMEDIR under properties. But they should BOTH be active if I'm not using FRS, right?

Someone please explain this to me. I'm utterly frustrated.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do here. It looks like you are trying to configure a root replica, which won't work with one server.

You need a DFS root share \\server1\rootshare. This will map to \\domain\rootshare.

Now, create links under this root. Link1 points to \\server1\link1. Link2 points to \\server1\link2

So now when you to to start, run and type in \\domain\rootshare, you will see link1 and link2.
