Hope this is not a duplicate - crashed during last post.
How do I remove references to non-existant files during boot? We removed Norton and replaced it long ago with another antivirus, but there are still references during boot that prevent Windows from opening until we respond to it. Windows then opens fine. We do not have original disk. Have looked everywhere from BIOS to Registry. References are:
symevnt.386
navap.vxd

Go to Start-->run--> type msconfig, then go to the startup tab and remove any entries found to reference Norton.

You might also want to check there are no entries in the system.ini file in addition to the suggestion you have already had to type msconfig.

Thanks for your suggestion. You won't believe this, but a FIND reveals no msconfig on the system. I have just reinstalled Win95, but still no msconfig. It exists on all our others though with Win98 and higher. Was there a change between Windows versions?
My system.ini reveals no reference to Norton, unless I am missing something and if so, I would appreciate your pointing it out.

Win95 doesn't have msconfig, but you can copy it from Win98 and use it with Win95. Read this thread:

the registry entry is
Hkey_local_machine\services\currentcontrolset\services\vxd
in the left panel remove symevnt and navap
