Determine if an Sql Server is available???

In an Access project (adp), is there an easy way to if my laptop is on the LAN. I tried to do a connection to the server and then trap for an error, if I am not connected to the server. This is rather cumbersome and it takes quite a while to error out. There must be a better and easier way to do this. Any ideas will be appreciated.
