Detecting Unnecessary Duplicate Files(Any Software Available?)

Hi:

I have another question re Windows ME. I am evaluating System Mechanic,utility software that aids in uncluttering the system files and registry. From running System Mechanic, I learned that I have what seems to be a large number of duplicate files in quite a number of groups. Is there any means available to strip away unnecessary files?

Hi, Smitee:

I tried and tried to use 'Findorphans.' The most that I could get out of the package is a Scan. Then,all action ceased. I tried deleting and re-downloading/installing three times.

Additionally, during the download/install, the software did not like being loaded to C:\Program Files. I finally got an Install by using C:\findoph.exe . But it did not seem to be fully installed because as I stated above, a Scan of the C:drive files is all that it would do. The Main Window remained blank throughout.

Do you know of a similar package that I could try?

HELP! HELP!

Hi:

I have been trying to use FindOrph, which I downloaded. I am wondering if I am giving up too soon on the blank Main Window that appears after the Scan step.

Please advise.

During first run.........takes a long time building list
Then maps dependencies...more time
I use Version 1.1.0.0, don't know if they have an upgraded version which may take even longer

It installed without a hitch on my machine..As I have had no problems with it I am at a loss to give advice on what install problems you may be having..

Have you terminated scan run before checking Ctrl-Alt-Del to see if app is [not responding]..?Maybe, don't terminate until you see that message...?

Also check your Versions and if possible DL (Vers. 1.1.0.0)
It definitely works on ME.

Finally sending duplicates to orphan bin is a very lengthy process..No batch functionality, each orphan has to be sent to bin individually so be prepared for lots of work..

If current version for DL from parent site does not work I am sure trial version could be legally forwarded by E-Mail.

Some questions: 1)Were the icons illuminated on the Main Window during the Scan operation?
2) I waited some 15 minutes to see if anything would happen. What test can I perform to tell me that it is going to run through the other steps?

Just ran Full Scan:

Note:
C:\ = 2.8GB
D:\ = 1.3GB

Relatively small compared to yours I bet..

From Start Program to Icons enabled - total time:
8 minutes 30 seconds give or take...

During that wait period Ctrl-Alt-Del showed Stimon (not responding), I simply ended task.

When bar at bottom showing progress reaches end of track you are ready to go.
Click on expand [+] button to display individual drives and you will then be able to use Find Next Orphan...

I have no idea how long it would take to map a larger drive...

Thanks for your response.

I suspect the my setup confuses this software. I sent an e-mail to Neil J. ??(can't recall his last name right here), the author of the software. My C:drive is 40GB, and it may be sensing my alternate hard drive D: 30GB.

The bar graph progresses across the bottom for the C:drive. But it does not take as much time as you have described for your smaller HDs. If you know how to contact Neil than the magazine contributor route, please send that info to. I suspect that my drives may be out of range, or something else is needed to make the software work properly.

I'll let it "Scan???" for 30 minutes just for the heck of it before I call it quits.

Smitee, I've thrown in the towel on that idea. I tried and tried. Also, I assume that I had Neil J. Rubenking's e-mail address correct with the message I sent. I suppose that he does not respond to e-mail there.

If you know someone who can arrange for an .exe download of that file, I am willing to give that a try.
