Is there a way to detect, using PHP in conjunction with, say, Lynx, if a URL is good? I'd like to implement a CRON job in PHP to go through a table of URLs and generate a status report which ones seem to be pointing nowhere. If I can't do it with PHP, any suggestions on how to go?

Sure, you can do that. But you don't need Lynx -- PHP can open web pages directly using either fopen() or the cURL libraries.
