For some reason our users when logging onto their laptops when they are not connected to the company domain, 2 things happen,
1 - All there desktop icons disappear apart from the recycle bin
2 - When they click start menu the programs tab does not expand to reveal the available programs but the ones which are in the 1st menu (i.e. Above the start button) do work.

I did have a group policy which included folder redirection for desktop items but that has been removed and everyone uses roaming profiles.

Any suggestions, as its driving me mad.

Thanks in advance

I'm probably looking at this wrong but:

...and everyone uses roaming profiles.

If the guys are using roaming profiles, then their documents would be stored on a central network location, and not the local workstation. (Unless you were using offline files.)

Also, get a user to check the location of their current desktop / start menu. (Properties etc.) Then get them to compare with when they are logged on locally.

Steve.

Steve,

The way i was referring to roaming profiles is that although the upto date profiles are stored on the server, there should be a cached version of the profile on the local machine so as to use when not on the domain.

From what i recall the profile was looking for a UNC server path for its desktop items but i thought that if folder redirection was setup with group policy it could be removed with GP... I will check the locations when im back in the office tomorrow.
Cheers

Got it sorted, "Enable Offline files" was unchecked (I thought it was) so enabled it, seeing desktop & start menu.

When logging onto the machine via the domain their desktop, and other settings, will be coming from C:\Documents and Settings\User.DOMAIN\*.* (roaming profile or not)

and a local machine logon would be C:\Documents and Settings\user\*.*

Cheers
