Desktop disappears!

Hi everybody,

I have a user who left his laptop alone for a while. Upon his return, his start bar and all his icons had vanished. His mouse pointer was still there, but hitting CTL+ALT+DEL would not bring up anything. I wound up having to power down the machine to get it to boot back up. It seems fine now, but any people here experience this before? Is this a Windows issue? Any help would be most appreciated, thanks!

I've seen this happen when explorer.exe dies or when a program completely ties up resources. I can't remember whether or not the mouse would move though.
