How does one get rid of the program desktop icons (not just shortcuts) without getting rid of the programs? It seems that it should be simple, but no one seems to know.

It sounds like you already know how to get rid of shortcuts, but want to also get rid of the desktop objects, like My Computer and Internet Explorer? Well, that depends a lot of exactly what OS you are on. Most windows OS's have a policy setting which can make the desktop completely blank, so that no icons at all appear... Like in XP
If you want to only remove selected objects, that is harder and requires deeper understanding, because each object is linked to the desktop in the registry with a GUID.
Thanks for the response. I am on W95. For example, an icon for "show desktop", among others, has shown up on the desktop, when it had been (and still is, also) on the taskbar. Over time several like that have shown up. With all the other goodies I have on the desktop, I would like to clean it up if possible.
