I have this machine, where basic functionality of the box seems damaged. It's a semi-fresh install yet, I closed a lot of services, ones whos description seemed unused to me.The machines complains about a service not starting at boot time, but I can't really view the Event Log, because Properties dialogues dont work, in anything.Windows update doesn't work, because scripting doesn't work in IE now.I can't even do builtins like Find Files, Copy and Paste, or move icons on the desktop.Find Files, never pops up, never starts a process.Copy and paste, just doesnt seem to work from Windows apps, but works in cygwin, get that.I can select Icons, but can't move, and no, auto-arrange isn't selected.I tried to start services on another machine, but get "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start".These include: ClipBook, COM+ Event System, Indexing Service, Print Spooler, Messenger, Network connections (I do have net, thought), System Event Notification, Windows Management Instrumentation.I have a few things disabled, ones that may be of interest are: RPC, Routing and Remote access.
As of right now, this machine is just being used off a hub, using DHCP for everything. Its useable to a point, I'm writing this on it.But some programs and things are messed up, and I can't even check for windows updates.

Funnyguy,

I don't know if this will help you but through studying for the Windows 2000 server exam I found a study question that relates...

After this install of 2000 svr, you se the DEPENDENCY SERVICE fails to start. How can you fix the problem?

Answer: Check that the local computer name is unique to the network....and make sure the proper protocol and network adapter are configured in Network Settings.

Maybe this will help....
