I have a server that now functions as a 2000 domain controller. I want to demote this server to member server and eventually take it out of service. I already have another server in place at the same location functioning as a DC. I noticed that the box that I want to demote is set as the global catalog server for the location. What should I do to successfully demote the box without causing any problems?

Thanks!

just make sure u have at least one GC on other DCs, that's it.

when u demote this box, fsmo roles will be transferred if there is any on this particular box. don't worry.

but, whatif u can't gracefully demote it? ok, here is a getcha, use dcpromo /forceremoval and do a metadata cleanup. i bet you may google a lot KB if you need forcefully remove a DC.

good luck!
