[yinyang] Is is possible to port a Delphi 5 program to a palm device? [yinyang]

I have several small database programs that I would like to be able to use on a Palm device. Mahalo,

The problem is not whether it's possible: just about any app can be ported given the right resources. The question is "How much effort is involved?"

Sadly, I suspect the amount of work would be substantial. You'd need to get the Palm (C? C++?) SDK and learn it and PalmOS and you'd need to figure out how to store and migrate your data. If you wanted to synchronise between PC and Palm then there's another layer of unpleasantness.

It depends how useful the apps are, I suppose.

Looking longer term it may be possible to port more easily to Pocket PC when (1) Delphi is integrated into .Net (2) PocketPC has a CLR runtime.

Sorry I can't be more positive...

On a more slightly optomistic note.

There is a programming suite avalible for the Palm which Uses a Delphi like language (I have a copy at home cant remember the name of it, sorry).
You will need to get hold of ROM code for the Palm you want to use.
However if you have the Delphi source of your programs, it should be fairly easy to transfer these to the Palm GUI
They will have to be small though. The GUI I am thinking of is very Delphi like with drag and drop palm buttons for example.

As a future project we want to write a Palm app to gather data to be transfered into one of our Delpi Apps (via a conduit). a sort of add on to the main application, there isnt much chance of porting the whole thing over it is much too large and complex.

Thanks for the information.

sggaunt: I'd appreciate the name of the program you refer to in your message. I'd like to check it out.

Hi Mahalo
It's called 'Pocket Studio', there are various parts to this e.g. The Pocket studio IDE and a seperate Palm emulator.
You can download a demo version from their website, but there are some limitations, for example you dont get the conduit installer and they don't supply any ROM files. You need these to make the emulation work with the require Palm version.
