Dell will not take windows xp

Hello,

I am fixing a Dell Inspiron 3000 for a friend. He wanted me to reinstall windows xp on it since it was cluttered with malware and such. I popped the CD in and started the fresh copy setup (the boot one). It seemed to go okay, it formatted however it freezes on the copying files part and different places. It simply will not continue. I also tried to install 2000 and the same thing happens. Please help!
