Can soomeone please help me as i am on the brink of going insane with my friends laptop which i have been trying to repair for the past month.

When the laptop is powered on, the dell screen appears for a second then the backlight goes out and i hear a kind of static noise from the bottoem right hand corner off the screen, when i point a light at the screen i can see the vista log on screen, i have also attached the laptop to a monitor and it works fine so it is a display issue.

First i thought it was the power supply(I Know), bought a new one, no joy, after a bit of digging i was sure it was the screen invertor, bought a new one and still no joy.

Ive read that it could be the backlight but the backlight comes on for a few seconds at boot up so im unsure.

Can anyone please put me out my misery and point me in the right direction.

Would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Just noticed a small blue flash from the bottom right hand corner of thr display - and a slight burning smell. GOD

Well, it suggests a short in the display lamp circuitry. Disconnect the multiway cable that leads to the screen - usually under the keyboard or escutcheon plate just above it. Connect an external monitor to the laptop, switch on and boot up. This will tell you if the video/display controller is still ok.

Without specialist tools you'll probably not be able to tell if the invertor is still ok. Lamp replacement looks like a distinct possibility. This website gives a rough guide:-

Remember, if you're messing with the invertor powered up, it has 1200v available. Skull and crossbones warning on this one...

Thanks so much for the reply, really appreciated.

cheers for the heads up on the invertor as well.

Ive attached my PC Monitor and it works fine. Ive also tried a replacement invertor and had the same issue as before.

Strange also with the static noise and the little flash of electricity and the burning smell from the bottom right where the invertor connects to the monitor, ive attached a link to a pic

Really clutching at straws and i think the backlight is my last hope.
