I have a dell laptop which works fine apart from the usb ports and audio. They have just stopped working. Device manager shows nothing wrong and when you plug in a usb pen drive, the light comes on, but nothing else.

Drivers are up to date and the event viewer shows no problems.

Any idea's?

Thanks
Kris

Check the device manager and see if the mass storage device pops up under the USB dropdown.
Also check the disk management and see if the device is there and see if it has a drive letter. You may have to assign it one. I've had problems with tons of hard drives and flash drives installed and when I plug in another device I have to continually manually assign a drive letter to it.

Nothing works in the USB ports and when you try to install the driver for the audio, it reports a device problem.

Try using a Linux LiveCD, and see if anything works with that:
Ubuntu is a live CD by default. It loads to its own desktop, and gives you the option to install or not. Be sure you use the CD version, not the download and run version, to make absolute certain your'e taking the OS out of the picture. If the sound/USB ports work under Linux, it's a software issue. If they don't, it's most likely a hardware issue, which is to say your motherboard has some issues... could be a busted/bulging/dying capacitor, I suppose.

and if it turns out to be a software issue, make sure that the latest Chipset drivers are installed, the OS is up to date, and then install the drivers for sound...

USB drivers are covered in the chipset driver...

also see if there is a BIOS setting for USB and AC97 (sound)...

also check the Volume wheel that some laptops have and adjust accordingly...

I owned a Dell Inspiron 1150 for a couple years. I can tell you - there is no volume wheel unless someone added it on themselves. [wink]

Here's a link to the downloads on the Dell site in case you wanna look there:

Also, there maybe be better driver downloads from the chipset manufacturer, which I believe is Intel, but I don't remember for sure.

Hi Meniblack

I also have an Inspiron 1150 which has the same problems. No USB and no audio. I have updated drivers, even reinstalled the operating system. Still no luck. I'm convinced its the system board. Please let me know if you have any luck with your attempt to fix.

Yeah, no USB and no audio definitely sounds like it could be a hardware issue... especially since you've tried reinstalling drivers, reloading the OS..

I don't recall ever having issues with the audio nor the USB on the 1150 as long as I had it.

It looks like hardware as I tried the Ubuntu option and that didn't like the ports either.

It looks to me like the system board has gone in some way as everything else works fine.

Thanks
Kris
