Can the Service Tag on a Dimension 4100 be changed? If so, how? A friend swapped mainboards between machines, and now the tags don't match.

I've already tried ASSET.COM (v1.02 and v1.08) with the "/S xxxxxxx" but they both error with "this machine does not support asset tags" or something similar. But I can see the tag in System Setup, so it's stored somewhere.

Minor problem I know, but it's driving me nuts! ;-)

Thnx
Jim

Well, I didn't know they put them on so that it prevented you from being able to do anything. I thought the service tag was just a number so that they know you are who you say for technical service issues. Anyway, have you tried clearing the CMOS? The seems like it might be the most likely place to store something like that.

Tried to clear CMOS, didn't work. I am convinced there must be a piece of software which can do it (probably written by Dell) but a Dell engineer I know wasn't aware of any special software for the purpose. Nothing on Dell's support site either that I can find. A mystery...

Just out of curiosity....in what application is the service tags not matching an issue? As in, how is this causing a problem. My parents have a dell and i'm wondering what issues this created for you.

Purely for tracking reasons. His company use the Service Tags to id specific PCs. I hate it when I can't figure something out! It's more annoying than anything else! :-]
