Dell Server w/ Veritas 9.1 Backup all of a sudden will only let me backup 19.1GB. Was Backing up 24-25GB. Hardware compressoion was set - tried Software but the test fails. Any suggestions?

Old tapes? They might have bad blocks and no longer be able to record as much.

Could the jobs be appending instead of overwriting?

thanks for responding - It is happening on all tapes the current tape has only been mounted 2x and Overwrite is on.

Double click on the job and look at the JOB LOG (or Job History). See if there is anything there that might give us an idea.

What do you mean by Overwrite is on? Is the media showing overwrite none? Or is it set for hours/days/whatever? If it's not set for none, then it will append until the overwrite time is up.

We have had this problem in the past. Backup was running just peachy for months then one night it would fail due to alck of space. We have the tapes set to Overwritable & Allow Append - Infinite. We are writing approx 24BG to the tapes which is then compressed about 1.30:1 to about 16GB. The only way to get the backups working when this happens is to reinstall the software. I am not sure why the backup suddenly "turns off" the compression, or why we cant turn it back on again.

Id love to see if someone has found a fix other that a reinstall of BE 9.1.

thanks,

Dave
