For some reason my 4 USB powered hub ports quit working on my Dell monitor. I have tried everything including plugging in the flow-thru cable into my other PC (where it is recognized and operates). When I plug in the flow-through USB cable on the inop PC it gives me the message "Unknown Device". But in the error screen when I click on driver details it says "No drivers are required or loaded for this device". I click it and try to upate drivers and when I get to Windows/System 32/Drivers folder, the "OK" button goes dim. This does not happen on the other PC and which is where I found the drivers should be used (folder and name). I look in the win explorer and the 2 drivers are in that folder. Both PCs are using Win XP Home SP 2 with all updates. Hardware is different, but it seems like the problem lies in the USB driver initialization. Other USB ports on the inop PC work fine for everything except the powered hub on the Dell monitor.

Are you sure it's not a hardware issue in the Dell monitor itself? Couldn't it just be a bad wire or connection somewhere, maybe somethign went sour in all that.

All I did was pull the PC end of the USB cable out of the inop connection and stretch it over to the other PC - works fine with "Found new hardware", etc. The inop PC will not allow a driver to be identified. Is there a possibility of IRQ conflicts? Or do IRQs not have anything to do with the hubs?

No clue on the IRQ's. Have you checked to see if Dell has any sort of software or firmware updates related to this? Maybe it's a known issue?

Yes, started with the Dell forum for monitors, but no replys yet. There is a driver on the CD-ROM even though there is no instructions on how to install it - there is also a newer one on support web site. Tried both but this PC will not allow any drivers to be associated with the "Unknown Device", either Dell 1905FP.inf or the usbhub.sys, or usbd.sys under Windows/System 32/Drivers. I am really scratching my head why the driver button goes dim and will not allow the USB drivers to be installed. It must be conflicting with something. Am I correct in assuming that the Dell 1905FP Monitor with a powered USB hub, needs a driver in order to work? There is no driver associated with this hub on the inop PC but is on the working PC.

Well, normally monitors do not need a driver. I've not used one that had the USB connections built in, though we do have some at work. My first guess would then be like yours. It's got to be a conflict - either with your current Windows drivers, or possibly a hardware conflict? Could it be that your current motherboard/mainboard just does not like the USB hub?
