There is a folder under the windows folder called Installer. This folder contains, on my system over 100 Mb of MS Installer files (msi). Is it safe to delete this folder? I have plenty of hard drive space however the installer folder contnues to grow in size. If memory serves, a long time ago I deleted this folder on another machine and was unable to un-install some programs.

There is another folder under the windows folder called Downloaded Installations. This one occupies about 50 Mb of drive space with msi and cab files. The programs inside the subfolders are ones I do not have installed on the system. Are these safe to delete?

Do not delete this folder! This folder stores cached copies of any application installed using Windows Installer technology. Any install that includes a *.exe AND a *.msi file (or just the msi file) uses Windows Installer technology (MSI = MicroSoft Installer). Office 2000 is a good example of this type of application. This is MS's proprietory technology for installing, deploying and managing applications in a "Windows 2000 and after" world.

The "Installer" folder is important and each respective application may refer back to this location in case errors arise or if a repair needs to take place (self-healing is a feature of MSI). Again, Office 2000 can do self-repairs and is a good example of an app that utilized Windows Installer technology. When it works, it is a life saver.

Leave this folder alone. If you are low on space---upgrade to a bigger drive!!!
