Deleting Files in W2k

I have W2K pro and cannot delete files from Windows Explorer or shortcuts from the desktop. I gat a message that says cannot delete file cannot find specified path. if I am deleting from Explorer the path must be OK. What's going on anyone know?

Have you a number of partitions? maybe th file is not located on the c partition.

Yes I have a number of partitions but I am having problems deleting files from Windows Explorer by highlighting the file or folder and clicking delete. So if the file is in say a folder in C drive it stil says the path is incorrect! How can it be if it's showing in Explorer on the C drive?
Thanks for your response and any further light you may be able to shed on this, it's got me baffled
