Delete a folder

I have two folders on my Passport external drive that I can't delete. There are no files in them. It's not a big deal but would like to get rid of them. Their is also one in my recycle bin that won't delete. The file name is .trashes and I get the following when I try to delete it.
"cannot remove folder 503. The directory is not empty".

Does the folder contain any hidden files?
