defragment hardrive win98 1

Hello,
I cannot defragment my win98 SE hard drive. Every five seconds it says that memory content changed and stars all over. I “REM” all strings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTWERSION\RUN AND RUNSERVISES and/or also
uncheck all "system configuration utility" check boxes on general tab AND/OR restarted in safe mode -- nothing helped the same problem. When I go to look kernel/cpu usage there are every five seconds spikes 60%-100% of kernel usage. HP win98 SE, 20 GB HD - 15 GB free, 128 RAM.

Do an Alt-Ctrl-Del and end task on everything but Explorer. You will have to do this several times to get down to Explorer alone. You should then be able to Defrag. Ian Boys

Restart in safe mode and it will generally finish!

What about the screen saver? Turn it off too.
