I have windows98 and have had a problem lately using defrag to degrag my drive. I ave run scan disk and all is fine there and also PC doctor - and they say all is fine - now when I run defrag - it comes up with an error that the drive has errors on it and must be taken care of beofre the degrag can be done and lists the error as defrag004....

what do I do????????

Help,, I wan to defrag my disk periodically and now I can't do it.....

Run scandisk using the surface scan option enabled. Better yet, buy a third-party utility for this (i.e. Norton Utilities, Mcafee Office, etc...)

Doesn't PC doctor help - I have norton antivirus - I have used defrag in the past and it used to work fine without coming up with this error.. why the change????

defrag004 is just a stop error with the defrag program and doesn't say anything about the disk error it found. If you have Norton "Utilities", use disk doctor to scan the hard drive. I don't believe Disk Doctor comes with Norton Antivirus.

You can always open scandisk and check the option for "surface scan" before hitting start. Also, you can try running both disk defragmenter and scandisk in safe mode.

Safe mode is the best option, and be prepared for a long wait while 'thorough' scandisk is at work - it's a long process - go make a cup of tea or go down the pup. This will mark out any bad sectors, which is possibly what defrag is encountering. Good luck. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

I forgot to mention you can do it from the MSDOS prompt, just type in scandisk/all and press return. Choose the drive you need to scan. This way in my opinion is the best way to do it, also you get a graphical display of what's going on. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
