I am using Windows 98SE, Office 2000, 192MG RAM 15GB harddrive. I do a DiskCleanUp, Standard ScanDisk, then try to run the Defrag. (I have also twice now run a Thorough Scan to see if that would solve the problem...no go. It gets to about 4% stops and gives me the error DEFRAG004. It can take up to four attempts between ScanDisk and Defrag before I can actually get the Defrag program to work. This has been happening for about 6 weeks and is really annoying. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated....thankyou.

Have you tried setting the maintenance wizard do it at a time that would be more convienent (like when you are at work) instead of doing it manually?

I neglected to mention that I own a Compaq. Seems that when problems occur and you use the Restore CD it does not format the drive as it says. Seems that most of my problems are due to installing the operating system over the top of itself all the time. Thankyou for your time in answering me.

Have you tried running defrag in safe mode? If that doesn't work, extract a copy of derfag.exe from the disc to a remote location (not the windows folder) and click on it there. The copy you have may be corrupted in some way. Andy.
