My defrag on my Win98SE Presario 1200 laptop stops at 10% and restarts. This has never happened before.

I always unhook periferals like my optical mouse and printer. I also turn off my screen saver first. I ran a thorough level scandisk. Then I start the defrag, and it works for five minutes or so and restarts. It ran for three hours yesterday without going through the whole process.

I thought I would download Diskeeper Lite, but it is an 11 MB file. Unless you think it is superior to what is in my on-board software.

Ideas? Thanks.

Daniel

angler,
Before starting a defrag, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and end task on everything except Explorer (don't worry, it's safe). Also make sure power management isn't interfering by going to the Control Panel and checking the power options. Disable it for now. That should do the trick.

If not, reboot to safe mode and defrag from there. Just hit F8 during the boot process (before you see the Windows Logo) to get the option for safe mode.

Windows ME defrag ( free ) , very fast . I don't need to close
( ctrl/alt/delete , I don't use a screen saver ) anything down to run defrag , no restarts .

Get it from here .
W9X-Me-Defrag

================================

Open Windows Explorer , go down to Windows , left click on the yellow
folder , this opens the right hand panel .
Scroll down to defrag & write down the exact name . Next , right
click on defrag , scroll down to rename & click on it . Now left
click at the end of defrag & add the word old . So if you had the
word defrag , it now becomes defragold .
Now rename MEdefrag to whatever you wrote down ( usually Defrag ) , drag & drop it on
the yellow Windows folder or anywhere in the right hand side .
Both achive the same thing & Windows will after you close , put it
alphabetically . That's it .

=================================

Also , to make ME Defrag even Faster for it's 1st run ( you may have a corrupt file ) from
Windows Explorer , Delete all the files ( except the read only file )
in Windows > Applog . Taskmon will rebuild the Applog file .

To view Applog , do this .
Windows Explorer > View > Folder Options > View , click on Show all files . Click OK .

If above mention doesn't work for you . You might try and delete your temp files and internet explorer files.
You might have a long file name and that will cause sandisk and defrag not to work.

I always run defrag in safe mode, that way you are sure everything unnecessary is disabled. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

Howdy:

Mulga is right.. scandisk and defragging in Safe Mode is the recommended method.. BUT, get Diskkeeper Lite.. Way better than any of the generic Windows programs by a long shot..

No need to close anything down OR disable your screensaver. The program works right through it.. I run it on every system I own and it has become standard install for all of the work systems at my place of business.

Thanks all for the advice. I am going to try the safe mode technique.

Sorry for getting back so late. I fell on the ice Sunday trying to clear my neighbor's driveway. I boogered up both knee caps! I am standing in front of my computer because I can't get up and down!

I will try this tonight and get back.

Thanks again!

Last night I rebooted to Safe Mode and the whole C drive defragged in less than two hours. No hiccups or restarts!

Thanks to everyone for this info! You folks are great!

Install Windows ME defrag & you will be talking minutes , not hours .

jmatt,

Will Windows ME defrag work with Windows 98?

Yes angler2229 , I use it myself .

If you comfortable with altering files , just Copy & Paste ME defrag ( make sure it is named Defrag ) into the folder .
