Defrag never starts

I tried to defrag a hard disk used for a long time. I notice the HD light blinking but the Defrag never starts (stays all the time at 0%).
Already run the Scandisk with no events on the log.
Stopped all the possible processes.
Also installed the PowerDefrag with no solution.
Any ideias? TIA

There are many threads and FAQ's all over this site (not to mention thousands of other websites) that have covered this in the past. To get a more detailed answer, do some searchin' ! [tab]

But a quick way around it is to bootup your PC in safe mode (use the F8 key before you see the Windows logo to get a startup menu to select Safe Mode). Run defrag from there, which should have no problems...

Thanks for your answer. Actually, I did some search before and only found restarting Defrags or errors during the ScanDisk phase.
Both of them are not my case, I guess, because I did some ScanDisks before and halted all the possoble running processes during the Defrag. The PowerDefrag boots up his own control program and runs alone in the computer.
I will use a simpler solution for this case: copy the whole Hard Disk to one other HD, erase the original HD and copy it back. All this will not take more than one hour.

Well instead of worrying about PowerDefrag, how about trying the safe mode option and just use the Windows Defrag?

I just turn off 'check disk for errors' and defrag that way, then go back and 'check disk for errors' after I get done. I will try the other way though.
