Was doing the regular job of de-fragging when I got this message at about 46%
A program has changed data on the drive, To repair your drive click scan disc. ID:DEFRAG0084
I then scan the disc and got the message
Scan disc has started 10 times because windows or another programme has been writing to this drive. Quitting some programmes may help scan disk finish sooner.
But nothing is open or running and after 13 hours - yes 13 hours it was only 400,000 of 1,816,000 completed so I Cancelled it and shut down the computer.
When I booted up the computer again I tried to de-frag it again and got about 89% on before I got the same message.
The PC seems to be working quite happily other than this.
Can anyone help me with this ? Thanx in advance

Check to see if you have any applications being run in the STARTUP group. Secondly, do you have an antivirus prog running, albeit in the background. Thirdly, and this is the worst culprit, knock out the screensaver, and powersaver on monitor and hard disks.

In circumstances like this, I would also probably deliberately start up the PC in SAFE MODE and then run SCANDISK and DEFRAG.

Good luck!

ROGER - GØAOZ.

Run scandisk and defrag in Safe Mode...

Right-click on the icons in the tray area and choose "exit" or "close".

Then tap the Alt_Ctl_Del keys and end task on all items except for explorer and systray.

Then right-click on the desktop, choose properties, click the Screen Saver tab and select (None) from the drop-down list.

Then run scandisk, then defrag.

At tip for Win98 only:

CLEAN DEFRAG:
To defragment all your hard drives/partitions with no overhead (background programs running or TSRs/VXDs loaded), change to the \Tools\Mtsutil folder on your Win98 Setup cd-rom, and right-click on Defrag.inf. Select Install.

This will create a one-time entry (DEFRAG.EXE /ALL) under this Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce

Defrag will start automatically next time you boot, before the login prompt, therefore before any other program loads.
