Default home page... 2

Solved my curiously "now and then appearing" problem with desktop program icons when ever they decided to show up, by following the advice here, to delete the "shelliconcache" or whatever it was called, but since then (maybe this isn't related) I have had to repeatedly re_apply my default home page, because some weird search page will sneek in, making itself the default home page.

Any suggestions?

Spyware...

Download Spybot from

http://security.kolla.de

Install it.

Launch it once. Exit program.

Download the updated detection rules, install it.

Launch Spybot, tell it to check for problems.

When done scanning, hit fix problems, if it asks you to run again on bootup, say yes. Reboot, reset your home page when its done.

Well... Downloaded it, installed it and scanned a few times (daily), but that search page still creeps up on me occasionally and replaces my home page...

Any other ideas?

First, are you sure you haven't gone to a page that is continuing to download something to your hard drive?

Also, hit the check for updates button in spybot, make sure you have all the updates installed. Select a usa mirror before you hit download, or it may take a few minutes. Scan again.

Search for a file called hosts, delete any entries in here, the only entry you should need is

127.0.0.1 localhost

Perhaps you missed the link in my post above? If so, be sure to check it out. There are two additional utilities you might want to look at: HijackThis! and CoolWebSearch Shredder. It sounds like the "Search Page" you're referring to is caused by CoolWebSearch.

But yeah I agree with Matt. Definitely take a look at your Hosts file and make sure there aren't any entries pointing to the mysterious webpage.

Thanks! I guess that I had wrongly assumed that by downloading SpyBot yesterday, it would of held all the latest updates, but apparently not.
After downloading the updates today and scanning again, seems to have solve the problem... It was CoolWebSearch and got rid of it!
