Defalt Microsoft Exchange Services stopped

We are running small business server with exchange.

The incoming mail has been working but has fallen over now.

It is telling me in Exchange monitoring and status that the Defalt Microsoft Exchange Services has stopped and that it is critical, when you click on this however it shows the 6 Exchange services we have enabled as started. I can't find which service it is that has critically stopped. The incoming mail was working till this warning popped up. We also have a problem where all outgoing external mail is getting bounced back. Exchange is set up as it was when it was working fine but now it won't send. I don't think the sending and recieving are related as they recieving was working while sending wasn't. Internal mail is sending and recieving fine. Please help if you are able to, it is confusing me.

in services, are all exchange services started? look in START PROGRAM FILES ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS SERVICES.

Has a reboot helped?

In the administrator console, expand first organisation (exchange),
expand servers
expand server name
expand protocols
click SMTP

on the right is the default server stopped? if so then right click and click start.

Failing this reinstall service pack 3 for exchange.
