I occasionally get a pop-up stating that "debug assertion failed" and the only option that works is to "abort", which shuts IE7 down. In tools>internet options>advanced I have checked both of the "disable script debugging" boxes, but this thing persists. How do I squash the debugger?

You say occasionally you get this error, is it at the same Web Page, or any old page?

As well as the two boxes you have disabled, have you tried unchecking "Display a notification about every script error"?

Have a look around Google for some ideas, there are plenty of hits involving Internet Explorer. The fact that this is a sporadic fault is going to make it hard for you to diagnose.

It wouldn't hurt to run some AntiSpyware and AntiAdware programs on your machine, as well, clean out your Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, Form data and Saved Passwords, etc.
