While trying to get rid of a browser hijacker (Incredifind) I somehow trashed MS Internet Explorer. [surprise] Now it just sits there and does nothing when you enter a URL. Status bar shows nothing either. I tried overwriting it with a new copy of MSIE, no change. I think I installed Netscape 7 and it works fine as does Outlook 2000, so the problem resides in MSIE.

I suspect I need to totally remove MSIE and re-install, but it seems to be locked into the XP operating system with no way to remove it.

Any suggestions?

Some thoughts:

1. Do to the reinstall:
Do not worry about removing it first. The MSI package will handle the chore.

2. You might try my "78% of the time fix":

Open notepad and create a new session called IE_fix.cmd
Copy paste the below and save the file:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Double click the save .cmd file and answer any prompts; ignore any error messages.

Well...the 78% solution didn't work so I tried the "full package" route.
DL'ed the IE6 SP-1 service pack and ran the patch at the command prompt as instructed.
That created two small files, a 0 byte file named IESETUP.DIR and a 22 byte file named FILELIST.DAT.
I then ran IE6SETUP.EXE which acted like it was going to do the install but suddenly stopped with the message that a newer version of IE had been found and that it couldn't install. Boom. It shut down.
A check in the control panel add or remove program utility shows nothing...no IE to uninstall. [sadeyes]

I promise it will work. Read Daniel Petri's notes again. The key element is that you have to use a CMD session to be inside the folder containing the downloaded update before running a very precise command line instruction.

Ok, maybe I don't understand what a CMD session is. Here's what I've been doing:

I go to the start menu, then accesssories, click on command prompt which brings up a black box that looks hauntingly familiar to MS-DOS, navigate to where I stored ie6setup.exe and paste in:

ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

Is that right? If so it dies right after I select XP as the operating system.

You can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

(where c: is your Windows drive).

You will need to have your XP CD available. If you re-install remember to update it.

Using SFC /Scannow at the command prompt will help in repairing IE.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Linney, thanks ever so much for reminding me about XP's System Restore! 90% of the time I work with Win95 and I totally forget about the features that are available in the newer versions. That fixed the problem. Have a star!

It's truly amazing...like having a little time machine you can travel back to the past with. Sometimes I wish my life had a system restore on it [tongue]

algraff,

Glad you got it sorted.

The only tricks to the IE download repair is that you needed to use the CD command to be inside the folder containing the download IE before executing the command.

I was having a similar problem and your 78% of the time fix worked. Thanks alot. I guess you can make it a 79% of the time fix now. lol
