Is it okay to use a DDR400 memory module on a motherboard that accepts DDR333 memory modules?

I've been getting STOP: 0x8E BSoDs (blue screen) lately and the computer shop replaced my memory module with a DDR400. The BSoDs are still present but the computer passes the windows memory diagnostic tests.

According to the Kingmax website:

DDR400 is Compatible with DDR333 / DDR266...

Hope this helps,

Erik

It should be fine. DDR400 will run at slower speeds.

Does your Stop Error list any particular System File in the message? Is it the exact same error every time?

Random "0x0000008E" Error Message on a Blue Screen in Windows XP

There are several other MSKB articles about 0000008E error messages that you can search for.

Are there any other clues mentioned in your Event Viewer?

Hi, There's no reference to any file in the message, and its the exact same error every time.

The error is:
Description:
Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 8054a832, parameter3 ede67c3c, parameter4 00000000.

Hi ronspree

The STOP errors you are getting could also be hardware related. You may want to open up your computer and double check that everything is supposed to be where they are.

Just to clarify, at which stage did you get the blue screen? Startup? Shutdown?

Lstan, I get the blue screen some 30 mins to about an hour after startup. Would re-seating the processor help? (Intel Celeron D 2.26 on ASROCK P4i65GV, DDR is PQI DDR400 256MB).

If the error occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

To check your RAM.

Is there a problem with overheating?

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

You can also load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r to check for problems.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
